“There Is Always Light”

As our country inaugurated a new president and the first woman and person of color to become vice president yesterday, we joined millions of Americans, particularly young people and people of color, in letting out a big sigh of relief. While we continue to lose too many of our loved ones to COVID-19 and the lack of federal response, we hold hope for a new day.

We celebrate with pride and joy all the young people, first-time voters, organizers, Black-led and multi-racial coalitions that made this moment possible and continue to build power for our communities. While we must honor the collective work it took to get here, it doesn’t mean our work is over.

The last four years exposed how much we must do to free our country of white supremacy and state violence. Young people have big demands from the new Biden administration. We deserve the rights to our future.

We want to see our new president act boldly and swiftly to reverse the damaging policies that have attacked our dignity and livelihoods, separated us from our families, and excluded us from the same protections afforded to the wealthy. We want immediate COVID-19 relief that prioritizes the health of people, not just the profits of a few wealthy corporations. We want a fair living wage for our work, not more corporate bailouts. We want immediate and urgent action to save our planet from climate disaster. We want to keep families safe in their homes. We want all children in cages to be united with their families and an immediate pathway to citizenship for 11 million people who have been caught in our broken immigration system.

We will not lose sight of the path to unity which flows through accountability. Elected officials who stoked violence by aiding rioters who attacked our Capitol or by spreading disinformation about our elections must be removed from government, including those in California. Our government leaders must thoroughly investigate the Capitol attack on our people and our democracy.

Young people are organizing year round for justice. We will keep building power to move forward together and to strengthen our democracy. We will not be left behind.
